White Cane
White cane is a device used by the people who are visually impaired or blind. It allows people who are blind, Deafblind or visually impaired person to navigate the world around them safely & independently. It is also called as probing cane. James Biggs of Bristol invented the white cane in 1921. The ultrasonic sensor can obtain the information of obstacles in the close range of the smart blind cane.
Different colors on White cane:
- An all-white cane means that the user is completely blind & has no usable vision.
- A white cane with red bottom means that the user has low, but some usable vision.
- A white & red stripped cane means that the user is totally blind and/or deaf.
Types of White cane:
Long cane:
Long cane is a type of white cane. The cane is used by either rolling or tapping from side-to-side as you walk. It extends from floor to the user's sternum & they are used to avoid obstacles if you have restricted or low vision. The tips can be changed for the method the user prefers.
Symbol cane:
Symbol cane are good for people with low but useful vision. The user would hold it in front of themselves to let people around them known that they are partially sighted. It is smaller than the standard long cane, it can be useful in busy locations.
Guide cane:
A guide cane is a shorter cane that is used to catch any immediate obstacles. It does not have as much movement potential but it can still be a useful tool. This cane is held diagonally across your body & used to find obstacles in your path including curbs & steps.
Made of:
The white cane is made of a long tube of aluminum tubing, fiberglass or carbon fiber with a handle on one end & a tip on the other. The handle may have a wrist loop on the end or a small crook, which can be used to store the white cane when not in use.
